The Horror Genre Institution - The Directors

The Success of Horror Film Directors

The director is one of the key people to developing a film therefore I am researching a popular director to see what films he directed and what he used techniques and theories did he use to develop such popular films. This director is James Wan.

He directed various popular films from The Conjuring and Insidious. Now both of these films play with the idea of supernatural and or have a real life setting therefore suggesting that the audience like this due to the films popularity.

Watching the trailer shows that he uses music throughout the sequence which creates a huge build up of tension, however when he cuts the music and has the woman alone in the dark it really builds on suspense and fear, due tot his technics being an unset code you almost expect something to happen therefore you become scared, this a really effective technique used by Wan has i plays with the audiences emotions.

The characters used are also very clever as Wan uses children therefor plays with an ideology used within society which is the innocence of children. He uses this to engage the audience in the film due to the fact that they become concerned for the children's safety. They are often seen as defenceless as uneducated at this age therefore some an encounter with the killer/ghost may lead them to curiosity instead of defending themselves This is something I could bring into my opening sequence and have a younger actor play the part of the victim.
